A Dialogue with Spirit on Darkness and Light
by Judith Pennington
I've been listening to the voice of my soul and writing down its wisdom for the past 15 years, and in that time, this wise, guiding teacher and friend restored my childhood faith in Spirit and taught me to live love and peace even in the midst of conflict and war.

To me, as a 25-year journalist, and to many people who have read the book I wrote about these "writings," the most wonderful thing about them is their lyrical beauty, wisdom and goodness. It is far greater than my own, so I often sit in my meditation room, with pen and paper in hand, and ask questions about anything and everything that puzzles me. The answers are
always complete, enduring and more than I know.

The war in Iraq has disturbed many spiritual seekers, not only because we have chosen violence over love, but also because we are resonating with
the anger and fear spreading across the world right now. I have found that deep and consistent meditation is the only antidote for this, along with meditative writing. Just after the start of the war, I picked up my pen and paper and engaged in the following dialogue on darkness and light.

It was held, unbeknownst to me, on the day of the Spring Equinox when there are equal parts of darkness and light on Earth. Now, with each passing day, there is more light. I hope this knowledge and the insights in the following dialogue bring you as much comfort and perspective as they did me.

It is also my hope that this dialogue will inspire you to ask your own questions of Spirit in a quiet, contemplative place, where your own soul so patiently waits to sing its perfect truth to you.

A Dialogue with Spirit on Darkness and Light

Q: What would you tell me now, as the world is at war, fear abounds on Earth and I, awaiting the birth of my granddaughter, wish to take the high
road, but also to be in touch with my deepest feelings?

A: See how easy it is to be calm and patient as events unfold and to know that the Father is present in this and all things? When this is thy state of mind, nothing can unseat thee from peace and dissolve peace in thee, for the One is within and is All That Is.

No matter what events are called into place by the actions of others, these are harmless to the ones with their hearts in the Father's love, for they are invincible.

Neither darkness, neither Light, finds itself in these events, but both, for each are contained within one another as part of the whole.

See how this occurs. A fish jumps in water and the beginning of an idea forms in the minds of men. The nature of the fish is to jump in the Light, yet this very act brings darkness to the life of the fish; yet again, to the fisherman this is a source of Light. Here is food for the body and mind, even the consciousness, for in the doing is the learning which comes about from being on this Earth.

So we tell you: see the Father in all things and know that what seems dark and foreboding is only a perception on thy part; for, to another, it is
something else.

Q: You say that killing--death and destruction of people and their heritage--is good for one and bad for another?

A: This is so, and the truth of it is easily seen on the physical level. Take the question to the next level: what is learned by the minds of men? is learning always good? is it not the purpose of being on the Earth?

See this activity of consciousness, then, for what it is: a way to evolve the minds of men. One fish is no less valuable than another, for each does only what is in its nature; neither is one man's action right or wrong in itself. It simply is.

Q: Do we not have a responsibility to protect the lives of the helpless and innocent?

A: This is so and it is the nature of the compassion within the Father's heart, to which all moves in oneness. What one is able to do, in love, to assist in furthering compassion and peace determines the amount of Light within each heart and soul, and how soon soul will merge with the Father again.

There is a price to be paid by those who act in opposition to compassion, peace and love. But the price is not one to be exacted on Earth in judgment and hatred; this (judgment) comes later, as the soul, in the Father's light, recognizes the harm done by an act of ill will. No price is exacted of one who behaves in innocent delusion, only the soul's re-education by the Light.

See also, however, that the soul in error is part of the upward warp and woof of evolution toward the Light, for each event consists of darkness and
Light and it serves to bring others toward greater understanding of Love.

Q: Are you saying that even acts of love and compassion contain darkness?

A: We say that every soul contains both and can only project both in every act done. There is no perfection on the Earth, see, for here is the
playground of the heart and mind needing correction. One comes here for this purpose alone.

Q: Does an act of love and compassion in itself hold darkness?

A: Only if perceived to do so by another; otherwise, it is pure and holds darkness only because darkness exists within the doer of the act. You can see that these are one and the same: the soul and its activity, the deed. Only Spirit itself is pure, but see also that this attempt to isolate Spirit from the world is a kind of darkness, for Spirit is All That Is, and All That Is contains darkness.

What we wish to show thee is how events in the outer world are only projections from within the hearts and minds of souls seeking to purify
themselves and return to the Father's perfect Oneness. This oneness, within the Earth, is most easily and beneficially attained through the recognition that each event is darkness and light and thus is not to be repelled or judged, for it is part of thee and of All That Is. One cannot repulse what one is, for this creates fragmentation and loss of identity.

Instead, observe all events with the cool detachment of understanding the true nature of Life: that it shifts and changes, like waves in the ocean moved by the thoughts and emotions underneath the surface of the sea. So it is in each man, so it is in the ocean and throughout the universe, within the Mind and Heart of Spirit. Center the heart and mind on this memory and allow peace to move through every atom of the being, to create more peace, that the still waters of the deep create an unroiled surface open to the Greater Love and its messages of love, compassion and peace.

Here is the high road and attunement to the Truth of all things. Remember it.

Q: One last question. If one were to claim that God is pure light and nothing else, wouldn't this be so if this were the perception?

A: The perception does not change the reality, dear one, or the universal Principle beyond it. It just enables the holder to hold more light.

Q: Is this not the goal, to hold more light?

A: Not through delusion or false belief in one's power. Through acceptance of the duality that exists in All That Is and in self. Here is
transcendence, in this acceptance and understanding, and in this transcendence is the Truth of God.

See it as the weave of a cloth. While the fabric threads move in patterns up and down, and the cloth is made of these patterns, the patterns are not the truth of the cloth: the cloth is the truth of the fabric. One cannot perceive the patterns and successfully use the cloth, for this is distracting and not useful; but one can look inside the patterns to understand what the cloth is made of and how to make other objects of use and value.

See the whole for what it is: a compilation of parts. Neither is to be denied; only understood and accepted.

This is the way of the Master: only love.
